The Aluminum Slug Production Process

The production of aluminium slugs is an integral step in manufacturing a wide range of aluminum cylinders.aluminum slug production process From beverage cans to baseball bats, these slugs are essential for ensuring that the finished tubes are durable and precise. To achieve this, the slugs are shaped using a process called impact extrusion. This is a versatile method that uses a punch and die to shape the slugs accurately, and it’s used in a wide variety of industries.

The slug production process starts at our casthouse where thin strips are cast in multiple alloys.aluminum slug production process These strips are then hot and cold rolled to the required thickness and coiled. The coiled material then forms the input raw material for stamping slugs. Five stamping machines are employed to create slugs of different shapes and sizes, ranging from 3 to 40 kg in weight. The slugs are then soft annealed and surface treated according to the customer’s needs. These slugs are then ready to be transformed into collapsible aluminium tubes.

Throughout the whole slug production process, a high level of quality control is applied to ensure that the end product meets all customers’ requirements. This includes both the mechanical strength and the corrosion resistance of the slugs. The slugs are also subject to internal and external quality inspections. Moreover, the composition of the starting materials is taken into consideration, since higher purity enhances both mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

After the slugs have undergone all the quality assurance checks, they are sent to the extrusion plant where they will be turned into the aluminium tubes. The extrusion plant has three tunnel type annealing furnaces that are electrically heated. The aim of this stage is to anneal the slugs and ensure that they have high ductility, soft temper and low stress. It is also important that the slugs are free of oxides and hydrogen.

This step is followed by a spray application of an internal lining that will protect the metal against the corrosion, mechanical damage and other chemical effects. In addition, this step provides a barrier between the metal and any pharmaceutical or food products that may be sensitive to it.

Finally, the slugs are passed through an automatic packing line where they are placed in boxes of 25, each marked with the customer’s information. Once the boxes have been filled, they are loaded onto pallets. Each pallet has a capacity of 1,000 kg and is securely wrapped to prevent any damage during transportation. The pallets are then sent to the customer’s warehouse.
